Running the length of the sole of the foot is a broad band of dense connective tissue called the plantar aponeurosis. It is attached to the undersurface of the calcaneous at the back and fans out toward the front, with fibers and their various small branches attaching to the metatarsophalangeal articulations and merging into the capsular ligaments.
