| Human Kinetics Alumnus - a Special Recognition |
|
| |
|
|
|
The
first graduating group of the School entered the profession
as the Class of '49 of which there were 9 women
and 35 men. Since that time, 3605 graduates have received
the BPE, BRE, and BHK degrees. The Alumni Division is proud
of
the collective accomplishments of these people and regularly
recognizes individual members whose contributions have been
deemed noteworthy in their area of endeavor.
Considerations for
the selection of alumna or alumnus recognition in the following
factors:
|
| |
-
graduating, with a Baccalaureate Degree in good
standing from the School of Human Kinetics (formerly the School
of Physical Education and Recreation);
-
experienced a successful career in Human Kinetics, Physical
Education, Recreation, Sport, or related area;
-
served her/his community and constituency with distinction.

Fellows
of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education |
The
field of Human Kinetics focuses on the study of the art
and science of human movement and
physical activity and is represented by many professional/scholarly
organizations whose memberships range from a few hundred
to many thousands. These memberships are open, but Fellow
categories
based upon specific research productivity criteria are reorganized
within each organization.
The American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical
Education Fellow criteria are the most stringent of all and
the membership
of the AAKPE consists solely of elected fellows whose induction
is based upon their research and professional credentials: |
"Inductees
must have demonstrated competence in their professional/discipline
over a period of
at least 10 years to include all of the following: |
- Significant
contributions to the scholarly literature through the
study or application
of the art and science of human movement and physical
activity,
- Significant contributions to the professional literature
in this filed,
- Leadership activities in professional associations
and learned societies,
- Other
evidence of leadership in the field of kinesiology and
physical education."

The School of Human Kinetics Alumni
Division is proud that the following alumni have been honored
by election to the membership of AAKPE for their sustained
contributions to their field: |

On June 30, 1995, Robert Morford retired from
his position as Professor in the School of Human Kinetics and
joined the hallowed ranks of UBC's Professors Emeriti.
Bob began his professional career as an undergraduate student
in September of 1952 and became recognized as an outstanding
student/athlete (Rugby - 4 Block Awards) and graduated at
the head of the class of '56. He continued his scholastic
pursuits at UBC and was a member of the first graduating
class of the School's Master's Degree program in 1959. Bob
then went off to the University of California (Berkeley)
to study with the renown Franklin Henry and receive his Doctoral
degree in 1963.
Dr. Morford's facility for leadership and administration
was quickly recognized as he was appointed Professor and
Chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education
at California State University (Haywood) in 1965. In 1971,
Bob became the Director of the School of Physical Education
and Health Education at the University of Washington where
he served in that capacity until he was selected to replace
the retiring Robert Osborne as the Director of the School
of Physical Education and Recreation here at UBC, in July
1978.
Bob's eleven year tenure as the School's Director coincided
with the start of a universal change in the face and place
of the university in North America and a corresponding significant
change in the mission of the University of British Columbia
and its expectations of its academic community. As a result
of his experience, vision and guidance, the School's academic
growth, in terms of its undergraduate and graduate development,
scholarly recognition and research capacity received recognition
both nationally and internationally. During this time, Dr.
Morford was the co-founder of UBC's Allan McGavin Center
for Sports Medicine.
Bob's scholarly contribution to his profession was recognized
by the prestigious American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical
Education, when he was elected to its membership as Fellow,
in 1979.
The Alumni Division recognizes Dr. Morford's outstanding
contribution to his field and most pertinently the School
of Human Kinetics.
