Donald is responsible for the launch of the unique Abreast in
a Boat program of breast cancer rehabilitation and information awareness.
He has served as president of the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology
and was vice president of the Sports Medicine Council of Canada. Donald
received the Rick Hansen Sports Medicine Award in 1995 and the School
of Human Kinetics Outstanding Scholar Award in 1992. He has more than
80 peer reviewed publications, and more than 160 published abstracts.
Donald is a professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine.

Young Alumnus Award |
| |
This
recognition is awarded to a UBC alumnus under 40 years of
age (not having reached his/her 40th birthday before December
31st of the year in which the award is made) whose endeavors
in the arts, professional research, civic, business, community,
athletics or similar activities are worthy of recognition
and have brought honor to UBC. |

1999 ~
Erminia Russo BPE'89
Erminia brought acclaim to UBC's volleyball
program as head coach of the Thunderbirds, placing them
2nd and 4th
at the CIAU National Championship. She won the CIAU Coach
of the Year Award in 1998, and was named 1999 BC Volleyball
Association/University College Coach of the Year. Erminia
was named CIAU All Canadian and Canada West All Star
in the 1984/85 season. She has competed for Team Canada
for more than seven years.

Achievement Award |
| |
This
award recognizes an extraordinary individual who has set
a high standard for volunteerism and/or philanthropy. Through
a lifetime of support and commitment, he/she will have demonstrated
the true spirit of the Association mission statement and
set a fine example for all who follow. The recipient must
have a UBC degree or be an honorary alumnus. The award will
not necessarily be granted every year. |

1999 ~
Norman Watt BPE'49
Norman is an associate professor emeritus of Physical Education
and director of Extra Sessional Studies. He is chairman,
designer and organizer for the World's Worst Oil Paintings,
which became a fundraising event for the BC Paraplegic
Association.
Norman received the President’s Service Award for
Excellence in 1991, the first time the award was given.
He also received UBC Thunderbird Basketball Distinguished
Alumni Award in 1993. He has been at UBC since 1961
2000 ~ May Brown MPE'61, LLD'87
May is the recipient of Sport
BC's Daryl Thompson Award, the Order of British Columbia, the
1986 YWCA Woman of Distinction Award and the Order of Canada.
She was a member of UBC's Physical Education and Recreation faculty
until 1955 and was the head coach of the UBC's women's varsity
field hockey team. May founded Camp Deka's boy's camp in BC's
interior in 1961. Other activities include: member, YWCA Board
of Directors, member,
Board of Directors, Sport BC, member, National Advisory Council
of Fitness and Amateur Sport, and served as member, UBC Athletic
Council and the UBC Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee.

The
Alumni Award of Distinction recognizes outstanding achievements
of UBC alumni whose endeavors in the arts, professional research,
civic, business, community, athletics or similar activities
have brought honor to UBC. |

Rick Hansen BPE'86
1996 ~ Bob McGavin BPE'65
1999 ~ Bob Carkner BPE'58
During his 21 years as a principal in several Richmond high schools, Bob
was the driving force behind many unique initiatives including a Space
Studies Program, the Steveston Salmon Hatchery and the Casa Guatemala Orphanage
and Vietnam projects.
The Steveston High Alumni Association dedicated the Bob Carkner Global
Education Foundation in his honour, and he received the Richmond Secondary
Alumni Association Award for outstanding leadership in Global and Space
Education.
Bob received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from SFU in 1998 for educational
leadership and humanitarianism.
