Volunteer opportunities

The UBC School of Human Kinetics is happy to assist health, physical education, fitness and similar organizations by posting volunteer opportunities that they may have. If you are interested in having a position posted on this site please e-mail the HKIN Alumni Communications Coordinator.

Volunteer Vancouver ~ Residences for Independent Living Society
Residence for adults with physical disabilities, in the False Creek area.
We have a male resident here who has had a volunteer take him once a week on a Monday afternoon, to a local pool to assist with swimming. The male has Cerebral Palsy and finds that being in the pool has many benefits. Unfortunately, his volunteer is no longer able to assist on Mondays and I am looking for a new male volunteer for this gentleman. There would be training and it would be a 2 hour a week commitment, with lots of fun! If you have any info that may assist me in my search for a male volunteer to help this resident, it would be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, please give me a call at:

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver
This is a respected children's charity that has been operating in the Lower Mainland for 47 years.  It offers a range of mentoring programs for boys and girls aged seven to 18 and provides volunteer opportunities for men and women 19 years and older,  The "bigs" provide friendship, encouragement and support for the "littles" and the focus is on having fun, spending quality time together and developing good relationships between the generations.  Volunteering here doesn't take much time.  Some programs require as little as one hour a week, although some develop into more.  Volunteers are needed from across the Lower Mainland.

The Boys' and Girls' Club of Delta
This friendly and welcoming club provides a place where kids can play, create and make new friends.  Children and teens learn new sports, make crafts, cook meals, socialize, and join in games.  Volunteers assist with wide variety of programs, including assisting with cooking lessons and helping with homework.

KidsStart Mentoring Program
This program matches children with an adult mentor of the same gender and, when possible, of a similar cultural background.  It needs volunteers to help children and youth at risk.  Volunteers here put in about three hours, one-to-one, each week.  They may go on an outing, spend time on school work, or just talk.

Recreation Access Program at North Vancouver Recreation Commission
Getting out and about, exploring enjoying and participating in our community is not always easy for those with a disability. Volunteers in this program help people with special needs participate in existing arts, cultural, sports and leisure activities by going to class or activity with them and by helping them get the most out of it. As well, North Van Rec's Adapted Fitness program, exclusively for people with special needs, provides special paced gym and water exercises for those with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, head injury or stroke.

UBC Learning Exchange and The Trek Volunteer Program
UBC's Learning Exchange is a community outreach initiative located in the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver. The role of the Learning Exchange is to foster connections between people at UBC and people in the Downtown Eastside and other inner city communities who share common interests. A commitment to build stronger links between UBC and the community-at-large is one of the five central elements of Trek 2000, UBC's strategic plan for the future. UBC believes that a university's role in the community is to facilitate the exchange and application of knowledge--to share resources, to encourage constructive debate about community issues, to build capacity through learning, and to work with community members to find understanding and meaning.
