HUMAN KINETICS STUDENT JOBS

ACTIVE U STUDENT COORDINATOR

Job Classification: Part-Time, Student
Job Title: ACTIVE U STUDENT COORDINATOR
Department: UBC REC

Job Summary

To coordinate all aspects of the Active U program including: the Healthy Living Fair and Exposition, The seminar series, the workshop series, a kick-off event, and the planning of Keynote speaker sessions. The Coordinator will also be leading all promotions of the ACTIVE U program and will provide content and direction for the ACTIVE U brochure and ACTIVE U Video. (ACTIVE U description below)

Organizational Status
Reports directly to the UBC REC Coordinator, Fitness and Instructional. Liaises with faculty, students, the general public, and departmental staff. Works closely and will take direction from the planning committee.

Work Performed

  • Plan and implement all ACTIVE U programs including: Marketing, Event Organization, and Administration
  • Organize and plan all aspects of the Healthy Living Exposition
  • Book Instructors and Guest speakers for seminar, workshops, and keynote speakers
  • Plan and develop content for all ACTIVE U programs
  • Supervise 1 assistant and work with graphic designer for design of materials
  • Develop partnerships with campus groups and related external groups
  • Lead promotion of ACTIVE U programs
  • Develop and implement assessment tools to ensure proper evaluation and assessment of programs
  • Implement a risk management plan for all programs
  • Book all facilities and equipment that is necessary for the programs to be successful
  • Assist in other duties as required
  • Keep records of all financial expenditures through UBC REC financial shadow system

Supervision Received
Reports to the UBC REC Coordinator Fitness and Instructional and works under minimum supervision.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and flexible work schedules
  • Project management experience a must
  • Sound knowledge of the fitness field is essential
  • Marketing experience is an asset
  • UBC School of Human Kinetics undergraduate or graduate student
  • Ability to interact with faculty, staff, patrons, and students
  • Must be an effective public speaker and communicator

Pay Rate:
$2900 Honorarium

Position Length:

August 29 / September 5 – December 8 (estimated: 5 - 12 hours per week)

January 3 – January 13 (estimated: 60 Hours)

January 16 – March 31 (estimated: 5 – 8 hours per week)

What is Active U:

Active U is a Teaching and Learning Enhancement funded initiative. It is designed to promote education and active lifestyles. The program is focused around innovative and dynamic activities and educational materials that will engage students in active and healthy living. Programs will take place all year, but will all be focused around Active U week (Jan 9 –13). Programs will include: seminars, workshops, key-note speakers, a healthy living exposition, free programs and a kickoff celebrations

Part-time Gymnastics Instructors
Part-time Program Volunteers

The UBC School of Human Kinetics Gymnastics Centre is looking for mature individuals to coach, or to volunteer in, a recreational gymnastics and minor sports program.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach recreational/educational gymnastics and minor sport programs to pre-school and school aged children. Other tasks include: preparing daily and sessional lesson plans, completing term-end progress reports, and the set-up/take down of gymnastics equipment for specific classes.

Skills Required and/or Recommended:
• NCCP Level 1 Gymnastics Coaching Certification.
• Previous coaching/teaching experience preferred.
• Experience in dealing with pre-school and teenaged children or special populations.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently or in team environment.

Preference will be given to:
• UBC Human Kinetics and UBC Education Students
• Those pursuing a career in physical education or recreation.

Pay:
• Commensurate to skill, certification level and experience
• This is also a UBC Work Study Position

Part-time Facility Supervisors – Osborne Centre

UBC School of Human Kinetics Osborne Centre Gymnasium Complex is looking for mature individuals that have the ability to work independently while performing a wide variety of tasks including: setting-up a/v equipment, dispensing physical education equipment, dealing with patron issues and performing facility safety/security checks.

Job Requirements:
• Knowledge of the sport/recreation field and experience with audio-visual equipment is advantageous.
• Good health for bending and lifting is required.
• Ability to work one regular shift per week evenings or weekends.

Preference will be given to:
• UBC Human Kinetics and UBC Education Students
• Those pursuing a career physical education or recreation.

Pay Rate:
• $10- $11.50 per hour (varies with skill and experience)
• This is also a UBC Work Study position.

Shifts:
• You will be required to work one shift per week, 6 to 8.5 hours minimum, for the entire Winter Session (September 05 to April 01)

Fitness Centre Personal Trainer

Job Identification

Job Title: Fitness Centre Personal Trainer I

Job Summary
Reporting to the Fitness Centre Manager and will be responsible for delivering personal fitness programs to patrons of the Fitness Centre.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Fitness Centre Manager. Liaises with faculty, students, the general public, and departmental staff regarding the safe and proper use of the Fitness Centre and all fitness related equipment housed within the Fitness Centre. Will prescribe and monitor fitness programs for Fitness Centre patrons.

Work Performed
Provides fitness program prescriptions in the Centre of Physical Activity and Health’s Fitness Centre doing the following:
• Being available and accessible inside the Fitness Centre at all times.
• Will lead individuals and groups in a variety of fitness programs
• Monitor prescribed exercise programs
• Will provide motivation and feedback to all patrons
• Attending the weekly Fitness Centre personal trainer meetings
• Minor record keeping
• Checks identity cards ensuring only those authorized use the Centre
• General Fitness Centre security.
• Issues, receives, and stores ready-use physical activity and fitness related equipment according to specific written and oral instructions.
• Maintains the Fitness Centre storage rooms, work out areas, the front desk and all fitness related equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Will perform Fitness Centre rounds and tour the Centre checking for proper fitness equipment usage techniques and safety hazards.
• Performs regular cleaning, and inspections of, Fitness equipment as part of regular duties.
• Keeps informed of Fitness Centre policies and procedures and enforcement thereof.
• Provides information relating to the Fitness Centre schedule, policy and procedures.
• Will communicate in a pleasant, courteous manner and give responsive service to all users.
• Act as a safety officer during emergency situations
• Carrying out other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.

Consequence of Error/Impact of Decisions
This is a position of trust as it delivers programs to school-aged children, adults, and older adults from the community at large registered in Human Kinetics physical activity/fitness programs. Errors could result in personal injury, financial loss as well as in damage to the reputation of the School of Human Kinetics and the University of British Columbia.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Osborne Facility Manager and works under minimum supervision, performs most duties independently.

Supervision Given
Will be responsible for fitness testing and exercise prescriptions and motivation for all Fitness Centre patrons.

Qualifications
Education:
• Successful completion of 2nd year of University with studies in Human Kinetics

Job Requirements
• Ability to work under minimum supervision and flexible work schedules.
• Good physical health and mobility for lifting, bending, reaching, and coaching.
• UBC School of Human Kinetics undergraduate or graduate student
• Must be able to follow written and oral requests accurately.
• Ability to deal with faculty, staff, patrons, and students.
• Sound knowledge of fitness equipment and certified exercise techniques.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Good physical health and mobility for lifting, exercising, bending, reaching, spotting and coaching.

Skills:
Instruction and Technical skills
• Valid BCPRA Personal Trainer certification (with Older Adult specialty) or valid BCRPA Group Fitness certification (with Older Adults specialty) or Valid NSCA Certified Personal Trainer certification
• Valid Canadian Society of Exercise Physiologists (CSEP) – Certified Fitness Consultant (CFC) certification.
• Successful completion of HKIN 303 or equivalent
• Valid CPR Certification
• Must Pass Criminal Record Check.

Must have active interests in:
• Sports / Recreation / Physical Education / Health and Fitness
• Leading a healthy and physically active lifestyle
• Working with all age groups (mostly adults & older adults)

This is a front line service position for the School of Human Kinetics. Dealings with faculty, students, staff and the general public are numerous and varied in nature.
