All applications must include supporting documentation (see application checklist).

Applicants recommended for admission, will have their completed application forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FOGS) for approval. FOGS reviews the application and issues the formal offer of admission. As the number of candidates often exceeds the number of positions available, a record that satisfies basic entrance requirements does not guarantee admission. At time of admission the student is assigned a Graduate Faculty Supervisor who is a member of the Graduate Faculty and who has agreed to work closely with the student throughout their period of study. When possible, applicants are encouraged to become aware of potential Faculty Supervisors whose area of study is related to the student's study/research interest. Aptitude tests, including the Graduate Record Exam or the Miller's Analogy Test, are not required, but may be submitted for consideration.

how is my application assessed?

Potential Graduate Faculty Supervisors use the following criteria to review applicants who have met UBC's minimum admission requirements:

  • Scholastic Performance (transcripts)

  • Reference Letters

  • Statement of Purpose

  • Supervisor's Workload

The Statement of Purpose is given close consideration by potential Graduate Faculty Supervisors and should include the followong information:

  • Relevant background and preparation

  • Field of empahsis, specific study interests, type of research sought

  • Expectations, goals degree objective

  • Declaration of intention to apply for financial assistance

  • Graduate courses of applicant's interest to be taken at UBC

  • Graduate Faculty Supervisors whose interests and expertise parallel the applicant's interest and /or are potential Supervisors for the applicant (ranked in order of preference)

Admission to graduate programs of study

A formal offer of admission from FOGS will be sent to approved candidates. Those offered admission must notify the FOGS of their intention to accept or reject the offer by immediately returning the supplied response card, which accompanies the formal offer. Delayed notification could result in the offer being withdrawn. Candidates not approved for admission by FOGS will be notified with the reason(s) for rejection in writing.

international students

Student Authorization: To enter Canada, a Student Authorization is required. This may be obtained by applying to the nearest Canadian Consular or Immigration Office after receiving a formal offer of admission from the Dean of Graduate Studies. It may take as long as 8-10 weeks to process; for students from the People’s Republic of China it may take 3-6 months. To apply for authorization you will require: UBC’s formal offer of admission, evidence of adequate funds for your tuition, maintenance for yourself and if married, your spouse and children, plus travel funds to and from Canada. Please retain the letter of admission for presentation to the Immigration Officer at the Canadian point of entry. For additional information visit the Internation Students website.
