Research
Dr. Crocker’s research focuses on four interrelated areas. First research is investigating stress and coping processes in adolescent athletes (Funded by SSHRC). This research is attempting to determine how adolescent athletes cope with various stressors and the role of social support. Future research will be directed towards understanding how friendship qualities and social maturity influence coping. A second line of research is investigating how adolescents‘ perceptions of their physical self are related to health behaviors such as dietary restraint, smoking, physical activity, and anxiety Previous work involved a three year longitudinal study with 700 adolescent girls that tracked changes (Funded by Heart & Stroke). New research is investigating how adolescents cope with body anxiety in social settings and why different individuals choose healthy or unhealthy ways to manage such anxiety (funded by Sask Health & SSHRC). A third line of research is investigating motivated behavior in Special Olympics Athletes (funded by Canadian & B.C. Special Olympics). Lastly, we have examined the validity and feasibility of physical activity assessment instruments in various populations.
