UBC Changing aging™ fitness program

UBC CHANGING AGING™

~ AN INTRODUCTION ~
Specializing in Functional Fitness for Older Adults (60+)
This program would be of special interest to any Older Adults (60+). What do you get when you join?
The Changing Aging™ individual programs are designed to provide prevention of the common problems of aging: osteoporosis, falls, cardiovascular disease, dependent living. Our select group of personal trainers are all certified to prescribe fitness programs and take extensive training on the contraindications of clinical conditions. The exercises prescribed are very similar to those given to athletes, but are toned down to the individual’s abilities.

  Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I join Changing Aging™?

Because if you don’t make a commitment to fighting the normal consequences of aging, the decline in physical and cognitive functioning, you dramatically increase the risk of losing your ability to live independently and decrease the quality of your life. If you do join, and work at it, you will dramatically increase the quality of your life and extend your independence.
How does my Doctor become involved?

Pick up the Physician’s clearance form, and others from the desk in the foyer of Osborne Centre II, or phone and we will mail them out to you. Take them to your doctor, (s)he will fill them out and you bring them back and sign up.
What happens after I sign up?

Once all the forms and payment have been received all forms are given to the Changing Aging™ Program Coordinator. The Coordinator will review your medical history and assign you to an appropriate Personal Trainer. From there, you will receive a phone call within 48 hours to book your first two appointments (#1 Fitness Assessment and #2 Exercise Programming Session) during times that are suitable to you and your Personal Trainer.
What’s the difference between the Changing Aging™ and BodyWorks™ programs?

The Changing Aging™ Program is a fitness program for 50+ individuals. This group-oriented and independently functioning program is conducive to older adults who wish to exercise in a supervised setting during a.m. classes. Fitness classes are offered in the morning and are followed by a supervisory period, which is provided to members as they work independently on their personal exercise program. All CA members have access to the facility at any time. The BodyWorks™ Program is for working professionals and members of the community. BodyWorks™ members are allowed basic access to the facility at any time as well as access to fitness classes (for an additional fee): Spin/Functional classes, Tai Chi, & Iyengar Yoga.
Are there qualified professionals working for the Changing Aging™ program?

An American College of Sports Medicine certified Exercise Specialist is employed full-time as Fitness Centre Manager. Our staff are highly trained in the areas of special populations and exercise prescription. Among other very important topics, areas such as exercise contraindications/modifications and medications and their interactions with exercise are addressed in the 36 hour Older Adult Personal Training Course offered every summer. All staff are trained to interpret the entire Physician Clearance Form. We operate in partnership with the School of Human Kinetics and before anyone is employed by the Fitness Centre, appropriate training and certifications must be acquired, and shadowing hours with senior Personal Trainers must be completed before students are permitted to work with members of the facility.
Why is the Changing Aging™ Program Physician Clearance Form so extensive?

The Physician Clearance Form provides our qualified and highly trained Personal Trainers with the necessary information required for the safe prescription of exercise for older adults. Any information that can affect exercise is extremely necessary information. All staff are trained to interpret the entire Physician Clearance Form. A cardiac stress test is not mandatory for entry into our program; however, if your physician decides that it is necessary, he/she will arrange for an appointment, not the fitness facility. The information is not used for research purposes unless consent is provided. Please note that there may be a nominal charge from physicians for filling out the 3 page Physician Clearance Form.
Are there fitness classes associated with the programs?

Currently, fitness classes are only offered for Changing Aging™ members (included within membership fee) as well as BodyWorks™ members (additional to membership fee). Additional fee for all members: Iyengar Yoga and Tai Chi classes.
Is the Changing Aging™ program still appropriate for me if I am not yet physically capable of participating in spin classes?

Yes, even though you cannot participate in fitness classes, you can still take advantage of the supervision offered throughout the morning and the individualized programs created for you by your Personal Trainer to increase your physical work capacity.
How many Personal Training sessions come with my pass?

For Changing Aging™ members, included in an annual membership are 2 one hour visits with a Personal Trainer for a 6 month pass or 3 visits with a 12 month pass. For BodyWorks™ members, included in an annual membership is a 1 hour session with a Personal Trainer.
How much help is offered in the fitness centre throughout the day?

To ensure safety in the Fitness Centre, a Supervisor is always available during our hours of operation. For detailed questions regarding exercises, and programs, please see a Personal Trainer. Visit the registration office for more details.

Testimonials

“With an enthusiastic staff of knowledgeable trainers, the Changing Aging™ Program after only six months has gone a long way in restoring my physical fitness and flexibility, it's sharpened my brain and encouraged me onto a general health regimen. The liveliness of the staff and the friendliness of the participants add a satisfying social component to the program which encourages participation.” – Age 72, UBC Professor Emeritus

“I joined Changing Aging™ six years ago as a follow-up to the Healthy Heart Program at St. Paul’s Hospital. It is a well designed and very specific programme for each individual with very personal and well trained instructors. It has been a tremendous help in rehabilitation from a heart attack and for general fitness in my life.” – Age 70, Retired Architect

“….I’ve lost 23 lbs, gained a group of new friends and I have an occasion 3 times a week that I look forward to with great pleasure. At Changing Aging™, we may drag ourselves to the gym, but when we leave, there’s a spring in our steps as we mosey off for coffee and muffins. Thank you, Changing Aging™!” – Age 70, Retired Radio Broadcaster

“I started this program out of cardiac necessity…it improved my heart problem but as a bonus it made my whole body stronger, more agile, more stamina, more confidence, better balance and coordination and improved my social life.” – age 72, Retired Medical Doctor

“This intensive physical fitness calls on a 3 times a week basis produced incredible results. After 1 yr of participation, I am more physically fit than ever and my frame of mind is better. Life is fun. If you are over 65 come join us. You can’t lose.” - Age 83, UBC Professor Emeritus“Changing Aging™ coaches took me gently by the hand a few years ago after a bone marrow transplant when my daily exercise consisted of shuffling to the end of the driveway and back. Today, 4 years later, I’m a full-fledged member of the high endurance regulars!” – Age 60, Retired Planner

“I have been a member….since the summer of 1999…. I believe I am in very good physical condition for my age and likely am in better condition than I was 20 years ago. An additional benefit is the social aspect of being amongst others of a similar age and interests and enjoying going for coffee after the classes.” – Age 72, Retired Marketing Manager of the Canadian National Railway
