A Certificate Course in:

Individualized Exercise Programming for Aging and Clinical Populations

This comprehensive course is designed for Personal Trainers/Fitness instructors who wish to gain the tools necessary to work with healthy older adult’s (age 50+) and those with medical clearance to exercise. The course objective is to help health professionals learn the considerations required to create safe and effective exercise programs which are necessary for primary and secondary disease prevention for older adults.
Components such as health screening, fitness assessments, exercise prescription and program implementation will be covered throughout the 3 day course (20 hours total). While considering the effects of aging and the clinical conditions commonly seen in older adults, this highly unique course will provide the foundation to work with older adults as though they were athletes. Participants will learn how to utilize athletic training principles and tailor those principles to fit the needs of the older adult population.

Fitness Centre Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor


Job Classification: Part-Time, Hourly, Student
Job Title: Fitness Centre Personal Trainer I
Department: School of Human Kinetics

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Fitness Centre Manager and will be responsible for delivering personal fitness programs to patrons of the Fitness Centre.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Fitness Centre Manager. Liaises with faculty, students, the general public, and departmental staff regarding the safe and proper use of the Fitness Centre and all fitness related equipment housed within the Fitness Centre. Will prescribe and monitor fitness programs for Fitness Centre patrons.

Work Performed:
Provides fitness program prescriptions in the Physcial Activity For Life's Fitness Centre doing the following:
• Being available and accessible inside the Fitness Centre at all times.
• Will lead individuals and groups in a variety of fitness programs
• Monitor prescribed exercise programs
• Will provide motivation and feedback to all patrons
• Attending the weekly Fitness Centre personal trainer meetings
• Minor record keeping
• Checks identity cards ensuring only those authorized use the Centre
• General Fitness Centre security.
• Issues, receives, and stores ready-use physical activity and fitness related equipment according to specific written and oral instructions.
• Maintains the Fitness Centre storage rooms, work out areas, the front desk and all fitness related equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Will perform Fitness Centre rounds and tour the Centre checking for proper fitness equipment usage techniques and safety hazards.
• Performs regular cleaning, and inspections of, Fitness equipment as part of regular duties.
• Keeps informed of Fitness Centre policies and procedures and enforcement thereof.
• Provides information relating to the Fitness Centre schedule, policy and procedures.
• Will communicate in a pleasant, courteous manner and give responsive service to all users.
• Act as a safety officer during emergency situations
• Carrying out other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.

Consequence of Error/Impact of Decisions:
This is a position of trust as it delivers programs to school-aged children, adults, and older adults from the community at large registered in Human Kinetics physical activity/fitness programs. Errors could result in personal injury, financial loss as well as in damage to the reputation of the School of Human Kinetics and the University of British Columbia.

Supervision Received:
Reports to the Osborne Facility Manager and works under minimum supervision, performs most duties independently. Supervision Given
Will be responsible for fitness testing and exercise prescriptions and motivation for all Fitness Centre patrons.

Qualifications

Education:
• Successful completion of 2nd year of University with studies in Human Kinetics Job Requirements
• Ability to work under minimum supervision and flexible work schedules.
• Good physical health and mobility for lifting, bending, reaching, and coaching.
• UBC School of Human Kinetics undergraduate or graduate student
• Must be able to follow written and oral requests accurately.
• Ability to deal with faculty, staff, patrons, and students.
• Sound knowledge of fitness equipment and certified exercise techniques.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Good physical health and mobility for lifting, exercising, bending, reaching, spotting and coaching .Skills:

Instruction and Technical skills:
• Valid BCPRA Personal Trainer certification (with Older Adult specialty) or valid BCRPA Group Fitness certification (with Older Adults specialty) or Valid NSCA Certified Personal Trainer Certification or Valid ACSM - CPT certification or Valid CSEP - Certified Personal Trainer Certification.
• Successful completion of HKIN 303 or equivalent
• Valid CPR Certification/First Aid
• Must have active interests in:
• Sports / Recreation / Physical Education / Health and Fitness
• Leading a healthy and physically active lifestyle
• Working with all age groups (mostly adults & older adults)

This is a front line service position for the School of Human Kinetics. Dealings with faculty, students, staff and the general public are numerous and varied in nature. As conduct and performance impacts on the image of the School, a cooperative, friendly and professional manner and appearance must be exercised at all times.

Pay Rate:
• $19.50 - $24.00 per hour (varies with skill and experience)
• This is also a UBC Work Study position.

• Ability to deal with faculty, staff, patrons, and students.
• Sound knowledge of fitness equipment and certified exercise techniques.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Good physical health and mobility for lifting, exercising, bending, and reaching.
• A background in athletics/sports is not essential but it is advantageous .Skills:
Instruction and Technical skills
• Valid BCPRA Weight Training Certification.
• Valid CPR/First Aid Certification
• Must have active interests in:
• Sports / Recreation / Physical Education / Health and Fitness
• Working with all age groups (mostly adults & older adults)
